LUCE 2 - A hot summer week end 2 "Caronte"
It was a hot summer morning, and she could feel the sunrays caress her skin. Luce was slowly dozing off, indifferent to all the gazes coming her way. She had a remarkable athletic built which rarely went unobserved. Not that she enjoyed such attention at all, on the contrary, but she got used to it over time. She was back from a long walk on the beach and a long refreshing swim. Luce loved playing in the sea, like a dolphin, never swimming too far out though. She never quite felt comfortable venturing out at sea, couldn’t tell why, she was a very good swimmer after all. Gently cradled by the sound of the waves breaking on the shore, she was slowly falling asleep. Images, sounds, memories, so many instances flashed through her mind. She could see the crystal bridge ahead of her. All along its sides there were crystals flutes hanging. As she walked along the vibrations would stir them and, together, they would play a wonderfully melody.
She knew where it would have led her. It was a place very few people could reach in life. You had to be able to listen to your own inner voice. She had been there once already. There was a blinding light ahead. She knew she would hear that voice again if only... But she never ever since managed to go far enough. She’d always wake up beforehand. Suddenly, a deafening sound! - “what the hell… ?!?” - “I apologize, did you get hurt?” - says a guy standing aside and looking down at her. Damn football! - “Absolutely not, don’t worry” - says Luce, spitting sand out of her mouth. He smiles and off he goes. The crystal bridge had disappeared and she knew she wasn’t going to see it again today. Another chance missed. - “Can I buy you a beer?” - Flashback, perhaps it had to do with all that sand in her mouth. She rinsed it out with some water and lay back down. She remembered that evening very well, just a couple of weeks back.
It was a very hot summer evening in the City. It had been a long day and she still had a meeting to attend, before calling it a day. An hour to kill, close to dinner time, she had stopped at an oriental café. Perhaps that place had not been a good choice after all, with the air conditioning out of order it was like sitting a step away from hell. An excessive amount of heat was coming from both the kitchen and outside. Luce was eating away her dinner when a man walked up to her table. “Can I buy you a beer?” - “No thank you, I’m quite in a rush today” - says Luce, trying to be polite. “Perhaps another time” - he says. “Perhaps another time” - says Luce, waiting for next obvious question, which never came. He was standing, looking at her, not a word, just smiling. “This is weird - thought Luce - I am sitting here sweating like a fountain and there he is staring at me. What is wrong with this guy?” - . She took another look at him. There was something familiar about his energy. Suddenly, another flashback. “It cannot be, this is crazy!” - She woke up abruptly, drenched in sweat. It was blazing hot Sunday afternoon in the City. She had fallen asleep on the couch. The fan is running, windows wide open, and the thermometer on the wall indicates an indoor temp. of 31°C.
2 AM Saturday. A call comes in. The ambulance speeds through the desert streets in the city. It’s for a man, with a 15 years long history of addiction to cocaine.
